Book Review: Chasing the Moon by A. Lee Martinez

Genre: Monsters do have a heart! You just have to smack them in the nose with a newspaper…if you can find a nose.

Basic Summary: Diana just wanted an apartment. She gets one…that happens to overlap with other worlds/dimensions and monsters happen to be part of the deal. Well…one monster…initially. SHE DIDN’T READ THE FINE PRINT.

Rating: 4/5

Warnings: There actually isn’t really warnings? I mean, monsters eat people and are violent but….it’s not…it’s kinda funny? It is funny. So..I don’t know.

Review:

Eldritch Horrors learning human manners and trying, though often times failing, to follower them: check.

Human characters who are relatable and clever: check.

A love story that doesn’t involve the main character: check.

Add all this together with a humorous narrative and great interactions among the characters. It’s an all around great story. It’s another book by A. Lee Martinez that I loved and was great.  Diana is a well rounded character. She gets powers near the beginning of the book and it was completely hilarious when she managed to make a whole bunch of people want to buy coats (she works in a department store…in the coat section) and how it all plays out just had me cackling.

There are so many hilarious scenes in the book like that and it’s hard not to just keep smiling while reading.

Why four stars out of five, then? It took me a few chapters to get a gist of the general story and “world” (setting and such). The story, just in those few couple of chapters, felt a little too disjointed. They are still fun pages, though.
