Book Summary: Starr Carter sees her childhood best friend, Khalil, get shot by police after they were pulled over. Full summary here.
Warnings: Police shootings, gang violence, domestic violence, riots, and police responding to protests in a violent manner. A lot of these aren’t done in particular detail. Rather, you kinda are just told from Starr as it’s in her point of view. The police shooting is, I believe, the most descriptive.

Do you ever read a book that you think will end up becoming required reading in future years? That’s this book for me. While reading it, I couldn’t help but think about how this will give a perspective into this time period where headlines and news media may fail at providing.
And I say this with the knowledge of no one being quite certain what will constitute a ‘classic’ because we are seeing books through a present day lens. This book is as certain as I can get.
Starr is a character who has her flaws but she’s gives a nice window into a perspective many people may not have. And this book covers so many topics. It goes into police shootings, yes, but it also touches on how change can also be done through working with your neighborhood. It also goes into interracial couples and the obstacles they face.
It also goes into what happens when you find out one of your friends has some underlining issues.
This review isn’t very long or thorough and I apologize for that. But just know, I found this book to be important.
