Book Review: Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend

Basic Summary: Morrigan Crow is a cursed child destined to die. That is until Jupiter North shows up asking her to be his student so she can go through the trials to get into the Wunder Society.

Review

Setting

The world that Jessica Townsend presents is both modern and old style. There isn’t talk of computers or smartphones but there is news casts and other such things to say the time period isn’t a drastically old one. There’s also the two different geographical places of the Republic and the Free States (where Nevermoor is located). Jessica Townsend does a great job painting a picture of what exactly each place is like.

Plot

The storyline is straightforward with the main plot being how Morrigan Crow is going to get into the Wunder Society. There are four different trials she has to complete with each one testing a different faucet of a person. For example, the first trial is all about quick thinking and ways with words. For the most part, I thought this was a clever take on this particular type plot like (the being worthy to enter a prestigious group or school). The only trial I had a problem with was the second one and that was just how it ended. It seemed an odd way to go about it and didn’t make sense until later on in the book.

Characters

All the characters were colorful and distinct, even (maybe especially) the characters who weren’t necessarily good. I liked the main character Morrigan. Jupiter was also awesome. The relationship and begrudging friendship between Morrigan and Jack was fun to witness. Though, Morrigan’s best friend, Hawthorne, stole the show for me on multiple occasions. He was my favorite character.

The character arc of Morrigan I found particularly well done. She has tremendous growth and you can see her coming into her own sense of self towards the end of the book.

Overall

I love this book and can’t wait to read the next one.

May you get lost in a book,
