Book Review: In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan

Book Summary: Elliot, a snarky and prickly lad, is transported to another world called The Border Lands. He is part of a magical school and finds friendship despite his best efforts.

Review:

Setting

This book takes place primarily in the fantasy lands known as The Border Lands. The world building isn’t the most detailed but I don’t think it’s entirely needed as the story is more about Elliot’s relationships than anything else. There are conflicts between different races (such as elves, trolls, etc) but it’s not explained fully. The narration was one of my favorite parts of this book as it was very snarky, especially in the beginning.

Characters

This book is a character centered story and found family. I think the characters were well fleshed out. Elliot is the main character and I enjoyed that he had a prickly personality. He wasn’t liked among his peers and there is good reason why. It was nice to read a book where the main character is flawed.  There are two other main characters: Serene and Luke. All of them have great character arcs. The relationships between the characters are particularly well developed.

Plot

There isn’t a solid, to me, plot. The plot seems to be Elliot making friends and connections. There are conflicts which have arcs among the parts of the book. I wasn’t bothered by the lack of a solid plot because the relationships and characters were well done. However, if you are a plot based reader, this may not be the book for you.  I did like the romance plots and friendship storylines this books has.

Overall

I liked this book and was definitely connected with the characters.

May you get lost in a book,

Chrissy
