Book Review: Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

Genre: Everyone is on the spectrum of horrible. And then people die.

Basic Summary: Libby has a reason to know what happened the night her mother and sisters were killed. The reason is money. She wants money.

Rating: 4/5

Warnings: Violence galore. People get killed. It can get a bit graphic. There is mentions of child molestation and a scene with non-graphic depictions between a pre-pubescent child and a teenager. Just. All the warnings. How about all the warnings.

Review:

There’s something about reading a story in which everyone has secrets and something to hide that’s interesting to me. Gillian Flynn happens to be great at doing it.

Gillian Flynn has a complex female protagonist who’s main motivation, in the beginning, is money. Libby Day takes a bit of advantage of a Kill Club group (people fascinated by murders/murderers). She does do the job that they are asking but there are scenes I winced at. Such as Libby going through her sisters’ letters and seeing what she can sell to the group.

It’s a compelling story. Seeing that a character having gone through tragedy and not coming out a noble person goes against the grain of what people would like to think happens.

The ending did feel a little rushed to me.  When confronted with what happened to her family, I was a little surprised with one part of it but saw the other bit coming. I actually don’t care much for complete ‘plot twists’ but if you like to be surprised by a mystery, this isn’t really the story for you.
