Book Review: Infomocracy by Malka Older

Got this book from the library!

Genre: Cyberpunk with voting?

Book Summary: Information is kind of the one government to rule all the other government except it’s not really a government. There’s also an election and people are still pretty greedy. Better summary here.

Rating: 4/5

Review:

The idea that there could be multiple governments in a single country, based on populations of 100,000, is an interesting prospect. In the book it is called micro-democracies. There are countries that can opt out of having this. However, the countries that do participate all follow the rules set by Information (the internet taken in the form of a type of governing body…?).

I could do a whole thesis on just how the governments work in the book. The author does a good job of having an extremely complex and convoluted topic (governments) and condensing the ideas into something that is understandable. Now, I did find it hard to follow along with what the governments do and how they function in the first fifty or hundred pages but it does work itself out and manage to make itself easy to understand.

Now, the three main characters are Domaine, Ken, and Mishima. I didn’t really relate to Domaine nor was I all that interested in his story. I did love Ken and Mishima – both their individual stories and their interactions in the book.

Mishima wielding a high heel is deadly, by the way.

The pacing was well done and the author does a good job balancing explaining  her world building and showing scenes.

Overall a wonderful read. I’ll definitely be looking up the rest of the series!

May you get lost in a book,

Chrissy
