Book Review: The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

Brief Summary: Nikole is proposed to by a guy she has been dating for a short while and doesn’t particularly like. Carlos helps her out of an embarrassing situation.  What follows is a story of LOOOOOVE.

Review

Setting

This book takes place in California in modern times. It actually felt like modern times. Nikole uses her phone a lot for work and they talk about the botched proposal going viral.  The narrative is told in 3rd person limited perspective jumping between Nikole and Carlos.  It was easy to follow along with writing wise.

Characters

Carlos, who we first meet in The Wedding Date which is the first book in this series, seems a bit different than when we first meet him. Of course, this could just be that The Proposal takes place a while after The Wedding Date. I found the characters overall likeable. I did find myself drawn more to the side characters. Nikole’s best friends are hilarious and one of them had, in my mind, a more interesting love story.

Plot

The idea of Nikole being proposed to by a guy she doesn’t particularly like and who does it in a public way all the while spelling her name wrong is hilarious in my mind. The big problem I have with it though is that we don’t really get to see the repercussions. Instead, we’re told that she’s having it a bit rough and the guy she said no to is a bit of an ass. But we only get to see a little of that.  I wished it was a bigger point of conflict for Nikole and Carlos to work through because that does seem like it would impact her life in a more concrete way. Otherwise, I thought the romance between her and Carlos was cute. It was refreshing that both the characters were transparent with what they want from one another and it wasn’t this “HAVE TO HOLD BACK FEELINGS. DON’T KNOW IF THEY FEEL SAME WAY.” type of thing.

Overall

It was a cute story and I do recommend this to others.

May you get lost in a book,

Chrissy
